BMW M Innovation and Technology - Part 5

BMW’s M Division has always been at the forefront of automotive technology, pushing the boundaries of performance and precision. From the early days of the M1 to the latest high-tech M models, the division’s commitment to innovation has remained unwavering.

In the 2000s and beyond, BMW M integrated a host of cutting-edge technologies into their vehicles. Advanced suspension systems like the Adaptive M Suspension offered electronically controlled dampers, giving drivers the ability to fine-tune their car’s ride and handling to suit the road or track.

Another hallmark of modern M models is the M DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission), which replaced traditional manual gearboxes in many high-performance applications. This innovative transmission system allowed for lightning-fast gear changes, enhancing acceleration and responsiveness.

I owned a BMW E60 M5 with a DCT transmission and it took a little getting used to.  Moving off was a jerky experience but once it was moving, changing using the paddle shifters or sequential gear shift was exciting, especially when one could hear the growl of the 5 litre M10 engine. There was also a pseudo automatic mode that was simply terrible due to its jerkiness.

BMW also pioneered Active M Differential technology, which uses electronic controls to optimize power delivery between the rear wheels for maximum traction and cornering performance. Together with dynamic stability control systems, these advancements ensure that modern M cars are not only powerful but also safe and accessible to a wide range of drivers.

Weight-saving measures have also played a significant role in M car evolution. From carbon-fiber roofs to lightweight alloy wheels, BMW M has consistently focused on reducing weight to improve performance and handling.

In the era of digital connectivity, M cars now feature advanced driver assistance systems, digital displays, and sophisticated infotainment. The latest models blend old-school driving engagement with modern tech, creating a driving experience that is as cutting-edge as it is exhilarating.

This focus on innovation has allowed the M Division to remain at the forefront of performance automotive engineering, continually raising the bar for what’s possible in a sports car.
