X6 Concept

X6 Concept

At the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the new BMW X6 was unveiled. It is essentially a SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) version of a 6 series in the same way that the X5 is a SAV version of the 5 series.

It appears that BMW are leading the way with this type of vehicle. Other manufacturers are also considering the concept of producing something similar but BMW are ahead of the game.

The X6 is one of those cars that can be difficult to decide whether one likes or hates. When I first saw it, I wasn't sure. However, the more I look at it, the more it grows on me. I think the front view is especially aggressive looking and gives the X6 real presence when viewed from the rear view mirror.

Comments from others have been mixed. Many are saying that those who want something sporty will go for the 6 series and those that want an SAV will go for the X5. They think that the X6 is a stuck somewhere in between and no one will want it. I disagree. I think there are plenty who will see it as something different, which is exactly what it is and I don't think there will be any shortage of them on the German Autobahns when they go into production.

BMW's theme at this years show was 'Efficient Dynamics' and 'Clean Energy' which are all about getting more power for less fuel thus reducing Carbon Dioxide emissions. These concepts were integrated into a version of the new X6 using a myriad of energy saving innovations. The most significant of these as far as the X6 was concerned was combining a combustion engine with electric power. This system has been named 'Active Hybrid'.

The 'Active Hybrid' X6 had some very smart looking blue/white illuminated logos on the rear and sides leaving no one in any doubt as to what they were looking at. I think that this is one feature that won't find its way into production for fear of falling foul of lighting laws.

It is suggested that the X6 may be put into production during 2008. It is likely to be produced with a more conventional engine rather than the hybrid drive. It will be interesting to see whether an M Sport version will be produced within time.
