BMW World & Museum

Any trip to Munich isn't complete without a visit to BMW World and the BMW Museum. To complete the experience, how about a factory tour too? All three are situated next to each other in Munich.

Recently, I visited both the museum and BMW World. Whilst BMW World opened for the first time earlier this year, the museum has been in existence for some time although it has been completely refurbished and reopened in July this year.

BMW World is a new concept for BMW set in a state of the art building with a double cone structure of steel and glass at one end to resemble a cyclone. Within the building, there is an exhibition of the BMW current model range including a representative selection of models. There is also a design and technology exhibition based on current BMW models where you can interact with many of the exhibits to understand the design process and technology employed in BMW products.

Also inside BMW World in a handover area for those who are lucky enough to buy a new BMW. The customer can opt to receive their new car at BMW World instead of picking it up from their local BMW dealer. The cars are delivered to BMW World straight from the factory where they are cleaned and minor repairs are undertaken to rectify minor damage which may have occurred during transit. The cars are then stored in a large warehouse and are placed onto what only can be described as shelves by a robot until the time comes for the customers to collect them.

When the customer arrives, they are given a presentation about their particular model and its functions. They then take delivery of the car in the presentation area where photographs are taken before driving down the circular ramp and out onto the streets of Munich. At present, this service is only available for customers from Germany, Austria, The Netherlands and the USA but further countries will be added within time.

Other features of BMW World include a large shop selling all types of BMW merchandise (remember you can order all BMW Merchandise through us without having to go to Munich!), a Junior Campus which provides children with practical workshops about mobility, several cafes and a gourmet restaurant. Also in BMW World is an innovative conference centre where every floor panel is height adjustable allowing the layout of the venue to be transformed into whatever layout suits the use of the centre at the time.

Having been a previous visitor to the BMW Museums on several occasions prior to its refurbishment, it was interesting to see how much has changed. Previously, the museum was situated in a bowl like structure with the exhibits set out around an ascending spiral ramp. The original structure is now used as a temporary exhibition area and contains a sparse selection of BMW concept cars from the past and present.

The main museum is now housed in new and modern purpose built premises attached to the old museum. Exhibits cover the entire life of the company and its car and motorcycle products. There are many mouth watering BMWs on display to suit all tastes whatever your particular BMW passion is. The new museum is a great improvement on the old as it is more focussed on the BMW marque whereas I felt the old museum included a little too many general exhibits to do with transport and mobility. The new layout is more spacious and does not have the cluttered feel that the old museum had.
